According to Google, a Gamer is “a person who plays video games or participates in role-playing games.”

However, one of the debates that started to rise up again in the recent few years poses the question; are mobile gamers real gamers?

As usual, our friends at Opinions took this discussion to the community to inspect their thoughts on the matter.

Anybody Can Be A Gamer, But Not Everyone Is A Gamer.

Makes much sense, huh?

Gaming is often identified as a culture, a form of art. Playing Candy Crush doesn’t suddenly make you a gamer, nor does playing Call of Duty.

Your first step to being identified as a gamer is to appreciate this form of art.

This is often why casuals, despite what platform they’re on, are not so popular in the gaming community. They come off as people who play video games to fill in that free hour or two before work. They are not ready to appreciate or invest in other games

Of course, you can still be a gamer while being casual.

That’s why we see a lot of people try to find time for their hobby which can be quite expensive. That shows their devotion to this art no matter the circumstances, just like any loyal hobbyist.

It Has Something To Do With The Design Philosophy

Since there is a whole different work-flow between PC/console and mobile games, this has built a meaning to what a video game really is.

For people who spent more than a decade playing franchises like Diablo, Skyrim, and Halo, all the way to deep narrative games such as The Last of Us and Heavy Rain, it’ll always be a little difficult for them to seriously consider someone who spends hours playing Angry Birds, Free Fire or Limbo.. despite how well polished and fun these games can be.

PC and console games are designed to feel expensive, realistic graphics, original sounds, and music.

Meanwhile, mobile games are often designed to be playable on the fly with a limited budget and an almost non-existent story.

Not to mention how the latter often show tons of ads and in-app-purchases.

Is it Elitism or Actual Facts? Gamers Thoughts

Opinions asked 5500 gamer, 55% of the votes said that they do not consider mobile gamers to be real gamers.

Here’s why they think;

Yeah and my kid sister is a biker because she’s got a tricycle.

Jack Snaf Spiefel

The main reason why so many gamers don’t consider mobile games because they’re cringy and not are generally quite different from the games you play on PCs and consoles.

Isaac Tam

Elitism is nothing new in the gaming community. Is it why PC and Console players think mobile gamers are not real gamers? Maybe, to some extent. However, Opinions did get some thoughts from people who play on all the platforms;

Without a doubt, I can win a chicken dinner every game on PUBG mobile, but ya throw me on a console with PUBG, and I’m just absolute shit so I’d say consoles and pc are the real gamers.

Nathan Ferguson

As someone who spends a lot of time on mobile games (not idles or anything similar), I gotta say it’s not as intense as console or PC

Shawn Secord

Meanwhile, 35% of the votes do consider mobile gamers to be real gamers. Despite mobile games often described as “low quality” and “less intense” than PC and console games, people have a different opinion on the matter;

Mobile games are games, gamers are people who play games. Y’all have an issue with definitions just let them be and stop gatekeeping.

Maya Shieda

It doesn’t matter long as you’re having fun. I have a ps4 but I play more on mobile.

VH Sherif

So what about the rest 10% of votes you ask? Well, it turns out there is a portion of people who really don’t care about this debate, surprise surprise!
